Successful 2018 solo and quartet competition

Sunday 22nd April saw the 2018 WMBBA solo and quartet competition held at Studley, Warwickshire. It was very successful day and the adjudicators Nigel Hall and Oliver Wilson commented on the high standard of playing throughout but particularly in the Junior Air Varie Sections. For the first time we included a percussion section and 10 year old Xylophonist Alec Banner from Shipston drew thunderous applause. We also had our first French horn entry and Fran Thompson from Shirley Band had a very successful day winning two prizes. Solo Duet and Quartet Contest 2016 – Report and Results

We held our inaugural competition at Studley High School on Sunday May 8th. The contest proved a big success with entries coming from a wide area including Bristol, The Forest Of Dean and Llangollen with big support from local bands Bilton and Shipston. Adjudicators Nigel Hall and Dave Bishop Rowe were very impressed with the standard of performance and were particularly impressed with the number of parents who had taken up playing in support of their children and were now performing at the contest themselves. Association Chairman Barbara Dunscombe summed up the feelings of everyone when she commented. “What a brilliant day. Enjoyed it all but particularly the youngsters early in the day…I’m shattered!!” David Birch WMBBA   Summary Of Results Adjudicators Nigel Hall and Dave Bishop Rowe Solo 8 years and under Lily Strentz, Baritone – Coleshill Felicity Angell, Trombone – Bilton Training Victoria Culshaw,  Trumpet – Unattached Solo 9 10 and 11 years Thomas Strentz, Cornet – Coleshill Sasha Turner, Cornet – Shipston Jimmy Scanlon, Flugel – Bilton Training Solo 12 13 and 14 Luke Barker, Cornet – Shipston Callum Davis, Tuba – Unattached Grace Coates, Cornet – Shipston Solo 15 to 18 Tom Cowan, Euphonium – Bilton Training Jack Lythaby, Horn – Lydbrook Solo Adult John Jemmett, Horn – Filton Concert Jodie Fisher, Flugel – Bilton Neil Kelsall, Euphonium – Bilton Air Varie Solo 14 and under Luke Barker, Cornet – Shipston Becky Strentz, Eb Trumpet – Coleshill Grace Coates, Cornet – Shipston Air Varie Solo 15 to 18 Jack Lythaby, Horn – Lydbrook Air Varie Adult Jack Lythaby, Horn – Lydbrook John Jemmett, Horn – Filton Concert Neil Kelsall, Euphonium – Bilton Duet 11 years and under Ben Murray and Leo Dakin, Cornets – Bilton Training Isobel Graham and Ben Murray, Cornets – Bilton Training Imogen Angell and Felicity Angell, Trombone/Cornet – Bilton Training Duet 14 years and under Luke Barker and Grace Coates, Cornets – Shipston Grace Coates and Sasha Turner, Cornets – Shipston Artie Stubbs and William Thomson, Cornets – Bilton Training Duet 18 years and under Luke Barker and Grace Coates, Cornets – Shipston Duet Adult Neil Kelsall and Samantha Edwards, Euphoniums – Bilton Sheila Allen and Jodie Fisher, Cornets – Bilton = Luke Barker and David Birch, Cornet/Euphonium – Shipston = Amy Wright and Samantha Edwards, Tuba/Euphonium – Bilton Quartet 14 years and under Bilton Training 2 Shipston B Bilton Training 1 Quartet 18 years and under Shipston Quartet Adult Shipston Bilton Silver Training Special Awards Youngest Boy Peter Coates Shipston Youngest Girl Lily Strentz Coleshill

Successful Youth Training Day

The second youth training day proved a great success. 25 young people enjoyed a day of music, working as a whole band and in small groups. The event will be run again in 2013 with the date to be announced soon.

2013 Entry fee Rise

With the rising costs of venue’s and the increase in insurance it has been necessary to add £10 on the entry fee to the Midland Regional Contest – from 2013 the cost for each Band to enter will be £120 (this entry fee will still include 30 Bandsmen’s tickets for access to the stage and both auditoriums). The ticket cost for supporters into both halls will remain the same as last year – £7 adults, £6 concessions and programmes will remain at £2   We know some Bands have been chasing the Entry forms to the Regional Contest, these should be available from Kapitol Promotions in mid November and will be sent out by the Regional Secretary as soon as they are received

The aims of the training day are to improve the playing standards of the participants through group sessions with tutors, and in a full band environment. The event is open to all brass bands, brass groups and individuals. The cost for the day is £5.00 per person. Youth Training Day Information 24 11 12 Youth Training Day Booking Form 24.11.2012

2012 Contest Cancelled

With great regret, we have had to cancel the 2012 contest. Although the closing date for entries to the contest had been extended, this did not increase the number of entries received and therefore it was not viable to run the event this year. Although disappointed, the Committee of WMBBA would like to thank the bands who had entered for their support and interest and apologise for any inconvenience to bands this decision may have caused. The Association also appreciates the fact that other bands made contact recording reasons why they were not entering this year – most stating they would be back next time. WMBBA are now looking at options for a 2013 contest
