Wychavon Festival of Brass 2025

Wychavon Festival of Brass 2025: An Iconic Brass Band Competition in Evesham About Wychavon Festival of Brass The Wychavon Festival of Brass is one of the premier brass band competitions held annually in the charming market town of Evesham, located just north of the picturesque Cotswold Hills. Every year, brass bands from across the UK come together to compete in this prestigious event, typically held in late autumn. The festival features various competition sections, including Championship, First, Second, Third, and Fourth Section bands, with the opportunity for bands to apply for higher sections based on their skill level. The festival takes place at the Simon De Montfort School, which offers a range of auditoriums and spacious facilities. A highlight for visitors is the large catering area provided by The Fleece Inn at Bretforton, renowned for its local real ales and delicious food. The Story of Wychavon Festival of Brass The Wychavon Festival of Brass began as an initiative by the Vale of Evesham Commerce and Tourism Association (VECTA) in the late 1980s, aiming to boost the town’s profile and attract visitors. The idea of hosting an exciting brass band competition was seen as a novel way to bring people together and showcase fantastic live brass music to the local community. Thanks to the support of VECTA, Wychavon District Council, and various local organizations, the Wychavon Festival of Brass has continued to evolve and grow over the years. It has adapted to changing economic conditions and the shifting needs of brass bands and venues, maintaining its relevance and appeal. Many bandsmen and music lovers still fondly remember the early festivals, which were originally held in Evesham’s Market Square and at All Saints Church. These initial contests were blessed with sunshine and created lasting memories. However, as the festival grew, it became a nomadic event, rotating between the Wychavon towns of Evesham, Pershore, and Droitwich, before returning permanently to Evesham in 2013. Now, over 20 years later, the Wychavon Festival of Brass remains a vibrant and dynamic celebration of brass music. The festival continues to innovate with new projects, such as the development of a Youth Festival, and works alongside other partners to promote the brass band movement through concerts and events throughout the year. Honouring the Legacy of Wychavon Festival of Brass Founders No event can thrive without the dedication and passion of its founders. The Wychavon Festival of Brass owes much of its success to two key individuals: Roger Spragg, who passed away in 2004, was instrumental in founding the festival and tirelessly supported its growth. His efforts in securing funding were crucial to the festival’s success in its early years. Clive Allen, who retired in 2013, played a pivotal role as Treasurer and Contest Secretary from the festival’s inception. His meticulous management and dedication were essential to the festival’s ongoing success. The contributions of both Roger and Clive are remembered with great appreciation, and their legacy continues to inspire future generations of brass musicians and festival-goers.
